We welcome participants on our standard courses and activities wherever possible. However in addition we can offer disability individual and group sessions, and we run a disability club throughout the season at Peterhead.
If you would like to find out more about participating on any of our standard courses, please get in touch for a chat. angie@aberdeenshiresailing.org, 07812380834.
We have a number of participants who enjoy a regular sailing session with an instructor. The environment on the water can be soothing for people who have autism, and can give a break when senses are overloaded.
At both Loch of Skene and Peterhead we have stable wayfarer dinghies which are good boats for those with disabilities to get started sailing. We also have the option of using smaller exciting dinghies for those who like adventure and prefer to learn more via self discovery.
For those who are restricted in mobility, we now have two Hansa 303’s and an Access Breeze at Peterhead, which can allow you to learn to sail independently. There is space for two in these boats, or we can put a hard plastic chair in the middle to support you to sit on your own. So lots of options for an instructor or companion to go it, or to sail solo. Participants will need to have some mobility in their upper body. Please get in touch to find out more, or to come to visit to see our boats & options.
At Peterhead, the ground floor of the sailing club is wheelchair accessible via the front door. We have an old fashioned disabled toilet (would not be compliant with modern building regs), but there are brand new disabled changing, shower and toilet facilities nearby at the marina that we can access. To get wheelchair users into the Hansa, we have access to a hoist in the marina.
Loch of Skene is not wheelchair accessible. Participants here would need to be able to walk a short distance. Please just get in touch for a chat so we can try to find the best way forward to get you / your relative on the water. Angie 07812380834
Disability /ASN Sailing Club
We have funding in place now for our disability club in Peterhead on Thursdays in 2025 from the National Lottery! Yippee!
And finally for schools or groups interested in some disability sailing, please get in touch. We can run sessions at a pace to suit your group. Sailing provides a great means to personal development, allowing participants to learn by self discovery, to problem solve, to work as a team, all with a sense of adventure and achievement. We very much enjoy our work with disabled people and would love to help you get afloat to share sailing with us.
